The establishment of Banaras Engineering College in 1919 marked the beginning of engineering instruction in BHU (BENCO). The College of Technology (TECHNO) and the College of Mining & Metallurgy were established during the following phase of growth (MINMET). The Institute of Technology was created in 1968 by the merger of BENCO, MINMET, and TECHNO, the former engineering schools of BHU (IT-BHU). Since 1972, IT-BHU has admitted pupils through the JEE test that is administered by the IITs. The former IT-BHU consistently placed among the nation's top engineering schools. By an Act of Parliament, IT-BHU changed its name to IIT (BHU) Varanasi on June 29, 2012. The Institute rapidly established procedures and practises in accordance with IIT standards after becoming an IIT.
