Kerala Kalamandalam is regarded by the Indian government as the university of art and culture. It is an important centre for studying Indian performing arts, especially those that originated in Kerala and the Southern parts of India. It is situated in the little town of Cheruthuruthi in the Thrissur District, on the banks of the Bharathapuzha river.

Three important Keralan traditional dance performance arts—Kathakali, Kudiyattam, and Mohiniyattam—were on the verge of extinction around the beginning of the 20th century due to different colonial authorities' prohibitions when Kalamandalam was founded. At this time, in 1927, Vallathol Narayana Menon and Mukunda Raja took the initiative to form the Kerala Kalamandalam association. To collect money for this society, they asked for donations from members of the public and held a lottery.Kerala Kalamandalam was established at Kunnamkulam, Kakkad, in November 1930. at 1936, it was moved to the village of Cheruthuruthy, which is located close to Shoranur.
