In West Bengal, India, there is a public state veterinary university called the West Bengal University of Animal and Fisheries Sciences (WBUAFS). It was created on January 2, 1995, as a result of a West Bengal law. It provides instruction and training in dairy, fishing, and veterinary sciences as well as animal sciences.

Bengal Veterinary College provided veterinary education in West Bengal prior to the founding of the WBUAFS. A leading veterinary college in the nation, Bengal Veterinary College was founded in 1893. The University of Calcutta sponsored the college's expansion, enrichment, and operation until 1974. It was the second-oldest veterinary school in the nation. A Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences was formed in 1974 after the institution joined with Bidhan Chandra Krishi Vishwavidyalaya in Mohanpur, district Nadia.
