In 1959, then-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru laid the cornerstone for this institution, the first of the nation's 31 NITs (formerly known as RECs).[3] In 2002, the institution's name was changed to the NIT, Warangal.

Ms. No. 2440 (Education Department) dated 15 July 1959, with Dr. D.S. Reddy (at the time, Vice-Chancellor of Osmania University) as the chairman. On October 10, 1959, at Kazipet, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru laid the college's cornerstone.
