The Government of India has designated it as an Institute of National Importance. It is one of the newest IITs, having been founded on August 6, 2008, by an act of the Indian Parliament.

The IIT Patna permanent campus is situated at Bihta, some 30 km to the west of Patna, and has been fully functioning since 2015.

The 501-acre (203 ha) campus of IIT Patna is situated at Amhara, Bihta, 35 km from Patna.Kapil Sibal laid the cornerstone for the IIT Patna, Bihta Campus in 2011. The new academic year at IIT Patna began in July 2015 on the institution's permanent site in Bihta. On July 25, 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the Bihta campus. Prior to this, the Naveen Government Polytechnic used a temporary 10-acre (4.0 hectare) campus in Pataliputra colony, Patna, where the institute was housed in restored buildings.
