One of Tamil Nadu's top universities is Anna University. It is situated in Chennai and provides over 20 engineering and architecture undergraduate programmes. Since December 2001, it has added 426 self-financing engineering colleges, six public colleges, and three government-aided engineering colleges spread throughout Tamil Nadu to its fold. On September 4th, 1978, the Perarignar Anna University of Technology was established. In 1982, the current name was chosen. As the majority of Tamil Nadu's engineering institutions were affiliated with Anna University by the end of 2001, it was transformed into an affiliating university.
