In the beginning, the university was established as the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College in the year 1875 by Sir Syed Ahmad khan, and the university started functioning on the 24th of May 1875. Later the movement associated with Syed Ahmad Khan and the college came to be known as the Aligarh Movement, which pushed the moto that education is very important and there is a need for the establishing a modern education system for the Indian Muslim populace.
They considered the competition in English and Western sciences necessary skills due to which Khan's visitation to their college was based on his visit to Oxford University and Cambridge University and he presented this idea of an education system and established these methods in their colleges.
As time passed later in Circa 1900, Muslim University Association was formed to spearhead efforts to transform the college into a university. The Government of India came into action by making the college into a university and informed the association that a sum of rupees thirty lakhs should be collected to establish the university. Therefore, the association and the Muslim University Foundation Committee were started and it collected the necessary funds which would be required. The contribution came from both the Muslims as well as non-Muslims and was converted into a university and established as Aligarh Muslim University by Act, 1920.
