In 1987, the Kota Open University (KOU), now known as Vardhman Mahaveer Open University (VMOU), was founded in Kota, Rajasthan, India. VMOU specialises on offering courses in the humanities, business, library science, and informatics. Geographically, it is spread out across Rajasthan, with regional centres in Ajmer, Bikaner, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Kota, Udaipur, and Bharatpur, as well as many tens of study centres in other cities and a specialised centre in New Delhi. In 2019, Ratan Lal Godara was named vice chancellor of VMOU.
