Madras Institute of Development Studies Admission

Dr. Malcolm S. Adiseshiah and Mrs. Elizabeth Adiseshiah established the Madras Institute of Development Studies (MIDS) in January 1971, not long after Dr. Adiseshiah left his position as Deputy Director-General of UNESCO.

A mission was despatched in 1976 by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi, on behalf of the Indian government to investigate the feasibility of turning MIDS into a national centre for social scientific research. On the basis of the mission's recommendations, the Institute was reorganised as a National Institute in March 1977 with funding from the governments of Tamil Nadu and India through the ICSSR. The trustees gave the newly formed National Institute their property, buildings, library, furnishings, and equipment in addition to a monetary endowment.
