The University of Delhi, which is also known as Delhi University (DU), is a collegiate, Public Central University which is located in New Delhi, India at 28.69°N 77.21°E. The University was founded in 1922 by an Act of the Central Legislative Assembly and is recognized as an Institute of Eminence (IoE) by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
As it is a collegiate university, Its main functions have been divided between the Academic departments of the university and constituent colleges. Hari Singh Gour served as the University’s first Vice-Chancellor from 1922 to 1936 and at that time only four colleges existed in Delhi. The four colleges were St. Stephen’s College founded in 1881, Hindu College founded in 1899, Ramjas College founded in 1917, and Zakir Husain Delhi College which was then known as the Delhi College founded in 1792.
When Sir Maurice Gwyer came to India in 1937 to serve as Chief Justice of British India, he took the post of Vice-Chancellor of the University of Delhi. And during this period post-graduate teaching courses were introduced and laboratories were established at Delhi University. Members of the faculty included Daulat Singh Kothari in Physics and Panchanan Maheshwari in Botany were professors at the University. Gwyer has been called the “maker of the university” and he served as the Vice-Chancellor until 1950.
