The Government of Karnataka founded Visvesvaraya Technological institution (VTU), formerly known as Visveswaraiah Technological University, a collegiate public state institution in Belagavi, Karnataka. All institutions in the State of Karnataka that provide programmes in engineering or technology must be connected with Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belagavi, with the exception of those that have the university's blessing and the government's approval. The institution bears Sir M. Visvesvaraya's name; he was a politician and civil engineer from India who served as the 19th Diwan of Mysore. One of the biggest technical universities, VTU offers possibilities for both management and engineering students.

The Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) was established by the Government of Karnataka on 1 April 1998 with its headquarters in Belagavi, in accordance with the provisions of the Visvesvaraya Technological University Act, 1994, an Act to establish and incorporate a university in the State of Karnataka for the development of engineering, technology, and allied sciences. For effective administration, four regional offices were built in each of the four revenue divisional headquarters, which are located in Belagavi, Bangalore, Mysore, and Gulbarga. The government established VTU to unify the various colleges that had previously been affiliated with different universities and their disparate curricula, practises, and traditions, as well as to advance the planned and sustainable growth of technical education in accordance with state and federal policies.
