At Burla, Sambalpur, Odisha, India, there is a state institution called VSSUT, formerly known as the University College of Engineering, Burla. It was founded in 1956, making it Odisha's first engineering school. Its present name, UCE Burla, became official on June 10, 2009 as a consequence of a decision by the Government of Odisha to grant it the status of a unitary university. UCE Burla was its previous name.

In 2012, it was determined that the institution qualified for central aid under Section 12B of the UGC Act.

In 1956, the Government of Odisha established VSSUT as University College of Engineering (UCE), Burla, the state's first engineering college. Jawaharlal Nehru, the nation's first prime minister, lay the college's foundation. Twenty students from three engineering branches—civil engineering, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering—made up the initial class. Afterwards, Sambalpur University took over administrative authority of the university, and eventually the Biju Patnaik University of Technology took over.
