The sole horticulture institution in the state and fourth in the nation is Sri Konda Laxman Telangana State Horticultural University, founded in honour of and in memory of Sri Konda Laxman Bapuji, a veteran freedom warrior and telangana hero.Telangana State's economy relies heavily on horticulture as its main source of revenue and growth engine. It contributes roughly 5.16 percent of the State's GSDP. Telangana State ranks third in area and eighth in fruit and vegetable output in India.

Given that the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act 2014's 13th schedule emphasises the importance of horticulture in the state (Act No. 6 of 2014), the Government of Telangana established Sri Konda Laxman Telangana State Horticultural University (SKLTSHU) with headquarters at Rajendranaga through G.O. Ms. No. 31 & 32, dt: 22-12-2014, Agriculture and Cooperation (H & Now located in Mulugu, Siddipet district, is the University Headquarters.
