The University has advanced in the quest of quality and success through several development periods since its founding. The University was granted 2(f) status by the University Grants Commission in 1993 and 12(B) status in 2005. The university received an A grade from NAAC in September 2014, making it the only university in Kerala to do so within the initial cycle of accreditation. The university received an A+ score when it was reaccredited by NAAC in 2021, keeping its distinction as the first institution in Kerala to do so. This accreditation was due to the university's two and a half decade commitment to the creation and diffusion of knowledge. Currently, the University's twenty-four academic Departments provide twenty-six PhD Programmes, twenty MPhil Programmes, twenty-five Post Graduate Programmes, ten Undergraduate Programmes, two Post Graduate Diploma Programmes, one Diploma Programme, and nine Certificate Programmes. In 2005, SSUS implemented the Choice Based Credit and Semester System (CBCSS). The university became the first institution in Kerala to implement the Outcome Based Teaching, Learning, and Evaluation (OBTLE) method in 2018 at the Post Graduate level. Undergraduate level is next. Through a series of workshops held both at the university and department levels, the curriculum and syllabi of the university's twenty-four postgraduate programmes have been rewritten.
