Co-educational state university Ravenshaw University, previously Ravenshaw College, is located in Cuttack, Odisha on the east coast of India. Established in 1868 as Ravenshaw College, the organisation changed its name to a university in 2006. The institution contains nine schools, 33 academic departments, and around 8,000 enrolled students. It is one of the oldest educational institutions in the nation, and the history of the institution parallels that of contemporary Odisha.

The people of Odisha and some liberal Brits aspired to establish a college in Cuttack following the catastrophic famine of 1866. The Bengali government was made aware of the challenges faced by Oriya students in receiving a college education by Thomas Edward Ravenshaw, the acting commissioner of the Odisha Division, who also succeeded in securing approval for the initiation of collegiate studies at the Cuttack Zilla School. As a result, the first college in Odisha was established in January 1868 with six students and intermediate classes. The Collegiate School should be transformed into a full-fledged college, according to Commissioner Ravenshaw's proposal.
