The Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT) Basar was founded as a university in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh (A.P). By an act of the Legislature in March 2008, the then-AP Government established RGUKT as a full-fledged university that would initially admit around the top 1% of rural students to the three residential campuses located in Basar, Nuzvid, and R K Valley. (Idupulapai- Kadapa). In August 2008, the first batch of around 6,000 tenth-grade students were admitted to a six-year integrated programme.
Following the division of the former state of Andhra Pradesh into Telangana and Andhra Pradesh in 2015, the three campuses were also divided between the two states.
