Professor P. Murugesan established the institution in 1994. The Institute of Computer Science and Technology used to be its original name. The institute was established by Murugesan to bring computer education to the Thanjavur District. The institute soon acquired affiliation from Bharathidasan University to provide postgraduate diploma programmes in computer applications.

Later, it grew to include a Polytechnic Institute , Institute of Engineering and Technology, Institute of Education, and Institute of Arts and Sciences.
