The headquarters of the private, deemed-to-be-university Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science & Technology (PMIST), previously Periyar Maniammai College of Technology for Women and Periyar Maniammai University (PMU), are in the Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, India town of Vallam. The campus is located on 216 acres (87 ha) and is 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) west of Thanjavur, 45 km (28 mi) to the east of Tiruchirapalli.

The Periyar Maniammai College of Technology for Women, which later became PMIST, was founded in 1998. Periyar and his wife Annai E. V. R. Maniammai were social reformers. Up till 2001, the college was a part of Bharathidasan University before being transferred to Anna University. It received university status in 2007 and changed its name to Periyar Maniammai University. It was one of 44 schools in 2010 that were scheduled to lose their status as public universities, which sparked protests and violence from students. The Supreme Court blocked the decision[5], and the matter wasn't resolved until 2014. [6] It was renamed Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science & Technology in 2017, after the University Grants Commission ordered 123 institutions to stop using the word "university" in the names of deemed universities.
