Through the State Act passed on April 4, 2007, GERMI established Pandit Deendayal Energy University (PDEU), formerly PDPU (PDPU), as a private university. The institution is close to GIFT City and is situated in the Knowledge Corridor neighbourhood of Gandhinagar city's Raysan village. Ahmedabad, the largest city in Gujarat, is 23 km away while Gandhinagar, the state capital, is 8 km away.

The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, has recognised Pandit Deendayal Energy University as a Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation (SIRO).

Through a State Act passed on April 4, 2007, Pandit Deendayal Energy University (PDEU) was established on the campus of Gujarat Energy Research and Management Institute (GERMI) as a private university.

The University is affiliated with the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and is accredited by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The National Assessment and Accreditation Council has granted the university accreditation with a grade of A++. As one of only two private universities in India to receive autonomy, PDPU was announced by the University Grants Commission (India) to have received it in October 2022 by Minister of Human Resource Development Prakash Javadekar. The first college in Gujarat to receive autonomy is PDEU.
