Formerly known as Regional Engineering College, Durgapur (also known as REC Durgapur or RECDGP), National Institute of Technology Durgapur is a public technical institution in the West Bengali city of Durgapur. It is one of India's oldest technical institutions and was established in 1960[9][10]. It is situated on a 187-acre (0.75 km2) campus.

The institution was rated 7th among NITs, 34th for engineering, and 72nd overall in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2022.

One of the eight of these colleges, the National Institute of Technology, Durgapur (formerly known as the Regional Engineering College, Durgapur), was founded in 1960 as a joint effort between the governments of India and West Bengal with the goal of advancing engineering education in the nation and promoting national integration. With the consent of the University Grants Commission/All India Council for Technical Education, the institution received Deemed University status in 2003; it was renamed the National Institute of Technology Durgapur and began awarding degrees under that name. It evolved into a fully-funded organisation run by a self-governing Board of Governors under the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Indian Government.
