A public technical university called the National Institute of Technology Srinagar is situated in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is one of the 31 National Institutes of Technology (NITs), and as such, the Ministry of Education (MoE) has direct administrative jurisdiction over it. It was founded in 1960 as one of several Regional Engineering Colleges that the Indian government built as part of the Second Five Year Plan (1956–61). It has been designated as an Institute of National Importance and is controlled under the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007, which established it.

Undergraduate applicants at NIT Srinagar must pass the Joint Entrance Examination (Mains), formerly known as the AIEEE. There are 12 academic departments there, and they provide programmes in engineering, applied sciences, humanities, and social sciences.

The Regional Engineering College, Srinagar, the precursor to NIT Srinagar, was founded in 1960. Wajahat Habibullah IAS served as the first Chairman from 2004 until 2014.During the first Five Year Plan, it was one of the first eight regional engineering colleges established by the Indian government.[Reference required] In 1965, the institution relocated to its current site. In July 2003, the Regional Engineering College in Srinagar was transformed into the National Institute of Technology, Srinagar. With the consent of the University Grants Commission, All India Council of Technical Education, and the Government of India, the institution received Deemed University status in the same year. Upon the passage of the NIT Bill by the Indian parliament on August 15, 2007, it was designated as an Institute of National Importance.
