The Bihar State of India's Patna is home to the National Institute of Technology Patna (NIT Patna), originally known as the Bihar School of Engineering and Bihar College of Engineering. On January 28, 2004, the Indian government changed its name to NIT Patna. The foundation of the pleaders survey training school in 1886 marked the commencement of NIT Patna, which was later elevated to the status of Bihar College of Engineering Patna in 1924. This became this institution India's sixth-oldest engineering school. It is an independent institution that reports directly to India's Ministry of Education.

The creation of a survey training school in 1886, which was later renamed Bihar College of Engineering in 1900, is the basis of NIT Patna. In 1924, a programme for graduate students was developed. In 1932, it adopted the name Bihar College of Engineering. Since Bihar had lost its sole Regional Engineering College (REC), located in Jamshedpur, when Jharkhand was split off from Bihar in 2000, the Indian government upgraded the college to National Institute of Technology (NIT) status in 2004. With the intention of establishing at least one NIT per state by 2002, the Indian government intended to convert all RECs to NITs. The first institution to be directly promoted to NIT rank was Bihar College of Engineering.
