The Andhra Pradesh government founded the institution in 2007; it is a state university. Previously, it was known as Nalgonda University.It is a public university that supports itself. It has an engineering college at panagal, Nalgonda, which was founded in 2013. By appropriately modifying the Andhra Pradesh Universities Act 1991 under Section 3(1) of L.A.Bill No.4 of 2007, the Government of Andhra Pradesh created Nalgonda University in Government Orders in G.O.19/HE (UE-II) Department, dt: 13/3/2007. The foundation stone for this institution was placed by former Chief Minister YS Rajsekar Reddy as part of the government of Andhra Pradesh's mission to enhance access, equity, and inclusivity in higher education.

The Andhra Pradesh government amended the Schedule of Act 4 of 1991, which was published in the A.P. Gazette on April 28, 2008, renaming this university to Mahatma Gandhi University. While the University's permanent campus is being established on 240 acres of property allocated to the University on the state highway (Nalgonda - Narketpally) at Anneparthy, 7 km from Nalgonda town, the University's headquarters were situated in Nalgonda town during the reporting year 2010–2011.
