About MDU university

Maharshi Dayanand University, which is also called M.D. University or you might be heard simply MDU is a university in Rohtak, Haryana 124001, India and is located in the latitude and longitudes between 28°54'00'' N and 76°34‘12’’E.

The university came into existence by Act No. 25 of 1975 of the Haryana Legislative Assembly in 1976 with the objective of promoting the inter-disciplinary higher education and research in the fields of environmental, ecological, and life sciences in Haryana and India. It was rechristened as Maharshi Dayanand University in 1977 after the name of the great visionary and social reformer or you can call it that it was named after the “saint” named Dayananda Saraswati and the university was named Maharshi Dayanand.

It had Unitary and residential characteristics during its initial stage, but later it became an affiliating University in November 1978. The University later secured the recognition of the board of the University Grants Commission - the higher education regulatory body of India for Central Government grants in the month and years 16 March 1979. 

It is spread over an area of 665.44 acres, and well laid with state-of-the-art buildings and a magnificent road network, presenting a spectacle of harmony in architecture and natural beauty. There are many other buildings such as 12 Teaching Blocks, 19 Hostels, a good build and elegant Vivekananda Library with 6 off-shoots, the majestic Tagore Auditorium which is very modern in its look, and many more. There are about 220 residential units that are allocated and available for the faculty members and non-teaching staff.

History of MDU University

As we all know, Kurukshetra University was the only State University that was at the time of the Formation of the State of Haryana In the year 1966, and it was partially affiliated with the State colleges of Panjab University.

Later on, when there was a disaffiliation of the Haryana colleges from the Punjab University and there was a need for growth of higher education in the state of Haryana, The new University of Rohtak was established at the erstwhile regional center of the Punjab University at Rohtak. And as time passed later the University was renamed Maharishi Dayanand University.
