The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has designated Kerala Agricultural institution (KAU), a state institution for agricultural education, as a State Agricultural University (SAU). It is located in the Indian state of Kerala's Vellanikkara.The Registrar is Dr. A. Sakeer Husain, and the Vice-Chancellor is Ishita Roy IAS.

By conducting, fusing, and integrating education, research, and extension in these fields of economic endeavour, the KAU is the primary and the principal instrumentality of the Kerala State in providing human resources, skills, and technology, required for the sustainable development of its agriculture, defined broadly to encompass all production activities based on land and water, including crop production, forestry, and co-operatives.

According to the Kothari Commission's (1964–1966) suggestion, there should be an agricultural university in every state. The Act 33 of 1971, which founded Kerala Agricultural University (KAU), took effect on February 1, 1972, and was signed into law on February 24, 1971. According to the KAU Act of 1971, 21 agricultural and animal husbandry research stations were also transferred to KAU, together with the College of Agriculture, Vellayani, and the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy.
