Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, also known as the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT (ISM), Dhanbad), is a public technical institution in Dhanbad, India .It already has a major campus of 218 acres in the Sardar Patel Nagar region of the city. Recently, the Jharkhand Cabinet authorised 226.98 acres of land in Nirsa for its second campus. It is a Nationally Important Institute. Before becoming an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), it was known as Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad.

In a resolution adopted during its XVII Session in December 1901, the Indian National Congress expressed its support for the establishment of a government college of mining engineering in India, modelled after the Royal School of Mines in England.

The Indian School of Mines & Applied Geology was founded at Dhanbad on December 9th, 1926, as a result of the recommendations made by the McPherson Committee, which was established by the Government of British India. The McPherson Committee's report, which was submitted in 1920, along with the approach of the Indian Mine Managers' of India in 1924, served as the main inspiration. It was directed by Prof. F. W. Sharpley from 1926 until 1946.
