Located at Valiamala, Nedumangad, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, the IISST (IIST) is a government-funded institution and declared university for the study and research of space science. It is the first institution in Asia whose main focus is on the investigation and study of space. On September 14, 2007, G. Madhavan Nair, the ISRO Chairman at the time, officially opened it. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), a division of the Indian Government's Department of Space, established IIST. IIST was headed by former Indian President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. 

The institute was designed to meet the needs of scientists and engineers in the Indian Space Programme by offering undergraduate and postgraduate education and research programmes in space science and technology. It is the only institution of its type in India to provide a BTech in Space Technology as well as courses that are specifically relevant to the field of space science and technology. The institute's founding director is B. N. Suresh, a former director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre.
