At Joka, Kolkata, West Bengal, India, the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (also known as IIM-C) is a public business school. The Government of India designated it as an Institution of National Significance in 2017, making it the first Indian Institute of Management to be founded. The first business school in India to receive triple accreditation is IIM Calcutta, one of only three in the country.

The Planning Commission was given responsibility for guiding and supervising the nation's development after India gained independence in 1947. In the 1950s, India grew rapidly, and in the late 1950s, the Commission began to have trouble locating qualified managers for the numerous public sector firms that were being founded in India as a result of its industrial policy. In order to address this issue, the Planning Commission recruited Professor George Robbins of the University of California to assist in the establishment of an all-Indian institution of management studies in 1959. His proposals led the Indian government to establish two prestigious management schools under the name Indian Institutes of Management.
