The Indian National Capital Region (NCR) includes Rohtak, Haryana, which is home to the Indian Institute of Management Rohtak (IIM Rohtak or IIM-R[1]).

One of the six new IIMs declared under the 11th Five Year Plan, IIM Rohtak was founded in 2010. Integrated Programmes in Management (IPM), Integrated Programme in Law (IPL), Post-Graduate Programme (PGP) in Management, Executive Post Graduate Programme for Executives (EPGPX), and Doctoral Programme in Management (DPM) are the major five courses offered.

In order to address the need for managers in public sector firms, the Planning Commission of India recruited Professor George Robbins of UCLA to assist establish an institute of management studies. IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta were thus founded in 1961 and 1962, respectively. IIM Review Committees were established in 1981, 1992, and 2004 to examine the effectiveness of these institutions, and at each time they suggested the creation of more IIMs, bringing the total to seven by 2007.

As part of the 11th Five Year Plan, the Ministry of Human Resource Development suggested establishing seven new IIMs in 2007. The National Development Council also approved of the idea. In the first phase, 4 IIMs were intended to be established in 2009, and in the second phase, 3 were expected to be established in 2010. However, only two of the four IIMs could begin operations due to infrastructure problems, with IIM Ranchi starting classes in July 2010 and IIM Rohtak starting classes in June 2010.
