The Prof. Vijay Shankar Vyas-led committee recommended Jodhpur as the location for the IIT in Rajasthan after taking into account a number of cities, including Ajmer, Bikaner, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Kota, and Udaipur. The MHRD gave final clearance for the institute's establishment in Jodhpur in late 2009.
