About IIT Delhi

The Concept of IIT was first introduced by Sh. N.M. Sircar, and later the member of Education of Viceroy’s executive council. The first Indian Institute of Technology was established in the Year 1950 in Kharagpur and in his report, Shri Sircar suggested that such Institutes should also be started in different parts of the country.

The government accepted these recommendations and year by year establish more institutes of technology with the assistance of friendly countries. Thus H.R.H. Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh during his visit to India Laid the foundation stone of the college at Hauz Khas on 28 January 1959. The first admission to the IIT Delhi was made in the year 1961. In 2011 IIT Delhi Celebrated its Golden Jubilee and its Diamond Jubilee in 2021.

The main campus is located at Hauz Khas in South Delhi and its two satellite campuses are at Sonipat and Jhajjar. The Campus covers an area of 325 acres and is surrounded by the Hauz Khas and Monuments such as the Qutub Minar and Lotus Temple.
