About Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University

The University came into existence as the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University and was established as Indraprastha University (IPU) on the 28th of March in the Year 1998 by the Government of NCT Delhi as a state University under the provisions of Guru Gobind singh Indraprastha University Act, 1998 with its Amendment in 1999. The University is recognized by the University Grants Commission (India), Under section 12B of the UGC Act.

The name of the University came after the ancient mythological city of Indraprastha, which was featured in prominently in the epic Mahabharata. Later in the year 2001, the university was officially renamed Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) which was named after the tenth Sikh Guru Gobind Singh.
