In Kochi, Kerala, India, there is a state-owned autonomous institution called Cochin institution of Science and Technology (CUSAT). It was established in 1971 and has three campuses, including one 66 kilometres (41 miles) inland in Kuttanad, Alappuzha, and two in Kochi (Kalamassery and Ernakulam). The university confers undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate degrees in engineering and science.[Reference required]

A movement for postgraduate education in the state led to the establishment of the institution in 1971 as the institution of Cochin by an act of the Kerala Legislature. In February 1986, it changed its name to CUSAT (CUSAT).
