In Patna, Bihar, India, there is a public law school and a National Law University called Chanakya National Law University (CNLU). It was founded in 2006 as a public university specialising in legal education by the Bihar government (Bihar Act 24 of 2006). The university's ex officio chancellor is the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court. It is one of India's independent law schools. The fake campus, which is located in the Mithapur neighbourhood not far from the city centre, is around 18 acres in size.

The university was founded on August 15, 2006, with the assistance of its vice-chancellor/pro-chancellor, Prof. Dr. A. Lakshminath, a former dean and registrar at NALSAR University of Law in Hyderabad, HRD Principal Secretary Madan Mohan Jha, an IAS from the 1977 batch, and Registrar(I/C), Vijay Kumar Himanshu, the deputy director of higher education for the government of Bihar. In accordance with section 2(f) and 12(B) of the U.G.C. Act of 1956, the Chanakya National Law University (CNLU) was created by the Chanakya National Law University Act, 2006 (Bihar Act No. 24 of 2006).
