In the Samba neighbourhood of Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir, India, there is a Central University called Central University of Jammu. It was founded by the Government of India by a Parliamentary Act called "The Central Universities Act, 2009".It began operating in 2011. The university's first vice chancellor was Dr. Sudhir Singh Bloeria.

The first Vice-Chancellor was appointed on August 8, 2011, officially founding the Central University of Jammu. The Central Universities Act of 2009, when read in conjunction with Act No. 25 of 2009, created it.

Three Post Graduate courses in English, Economics, and Applied Mathematics were offered at Temporary Academic Block-I (TAB-I) on the Sidhra Bypass Road in Jammu to start the first academic session (2011–2012). The next academic year (2012–2013) saw the addition of five PG courses at Sainik Colony Extension's Temporary Academic Block (TAB–II): Computer Science, Educational Studies, Environmental Sciences, Human Resource Management, and Travel & Tourism Management. All departments have been operating out of the TAB at Sainik Colony since the third session (2013–2014). The academic year 2014–2015 saw the introduction of four new postgraduate courses: mass communication & new media, social work, public policy & public administration, and national security studies. The university also provides an eight-subject Integrated M.Phil.-Ph.D. course.
