An institution of higher learning with a focus on Tibetan Buddhist studies is the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies (Deemed University). It was founded in 1967 as a result of discussions between H.H. the XIV Dalai Lama and Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, with the aim of preserving Tibetan culture and history. The institute's Central Library bears the name of Acharya Shantarakshita, a renowned Indian Buddhist scholar who travelled to Tibet in the eighth century to further the cause of dharma and attended the old Nalanda university. For experts in Tibetan and Buddhist studies, the Shantarakshita Library is a one-of-a-kind knowledge hub.The library has a unique collection of Tibetan-language Buddhist canonical books that have been translated from Sanskrit.
