Patna, Bihar, India's Phulwari Sharif is home to the AIIMS Patna (AIIMS Patna), formerly known as the Jaya Prakash Narayan AIIMS (JPNAIIMS), which conducts medical research. It belongs to India's list of important national institutions. Following a number of Patna High Court remarks, it began running on September 25, 2012. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare oversees the institute, which functions independently. On January 3, 2004, while serving as vice-president, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat lay the foundation for it. It started to work completely in 2018.

The decision to build new AIIMS at Rishikesh, Bhopal, Patna, Jodhpur, Bhubaneswar, and Raipur was made by the central government in 2004. Although Atal Bihari Vajpayee's administration saw the laying of the project's foundation stone in 2004, it was delayed by the change in government at the centre, increasing the project's cost from 3.35 billion rupees (US$42 million) to 8.5 billion rupees (US$110 million). The building of AIIMS Patna had been ongoing for more than eight years as of 2015.

100 students were accepted into the MBBS programme at AIIMS-P in 2013, up from 50 in 2012. A blood bank and eight new departments were established in May 2018. A trauma and emergency centre, eight modular operating rooms, and 250 new beds at the inpatient department (IPD) were all officially opened in August 2018.
